Cars: The Need for Speed
Opening January 22, 2010

Kansas' fascination with car culture has a long history. A number of early cars were manufactured in the state, Walter Chrysler was born here, and the National Hot Rod Association held its first national championship in the state. President Dwight Eisenhower, a Kansas native, championed the interstate highway system, and we claim the first completed stretch of interstate in the nation. Reb Russell's Saddle
Through November 2009

Lafayette "Reb" Russell made his name in the 1930s as an All-American college football player. This led to a Hollywood career starring in low-budget Westerns. Reb later returned to his home state of Kansas and took up ranching. This What's New display features a saddle used by Reb on his ranch near Pleasanton, as well as a lobby card from his film, The Man From Hell. These items are part of a collection donated by Reb's nephew, Jim Russell.
