Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln in Kansas
Jan. 29, 2009 -- Jul. 26, 2009

The 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth is celebrated in this display of objects associated with our 16th President's life and times.

Lincoln visited Kansas in 1859 to make political contacts. These contacts paid off the following year at the Republican Party's convention, where he was chosen as its presidential candidate. These were turbulent years for the nation. All eyes were on Kansas, where anti- and proslavery forces engaged in battles that preceded and, some say, initiated the Civil War.

This display will include objects associated with Lincoln's political career, such as a banner from the Lincoln-Douglas debates, flag used in the 1860 presidential campaign, ball gown worn at the second inaugural, mementoes of the assassination, and section of gallows on which the assassination conspirators were hanged.

Cars (working title)
Aug. 28, 2009 -- May 31, 2010

Kansas' fascination with car culture has a long history. A number of early cars were manufactured in the state (including the Great Smith pictured at right), Walter Chrysler was born here, and the National Hot Rod Association held its first national championship in the state. President Dwight Eisenhower, a Kansas native, championed the interstate highway system, and we claim the first completed stretch of interstate in the nation.

This exhibit will explore the impact of the automobile on Kansas, especially as it has affected food and entertainment. Kansans have wholeheartedly embraced car culture; after all, we’re spread out over 52 million acres, and it’s difficult to live here without a car!
