Kansas: Land of Literature

Literature has been part of Kansas life since people began translating thoughts and feelings into stories. While Kansas was developing as a territory and later a state, much of the words written revolved around Kansas and its place in the world. Libraries were established during territorial days by settlers who wanted to improve themselves. Today, authors and their books are as diverse as the state's history.

This exhibit looks at Kansas literature and authors from territorial days to the present. From newspapers, to tall tales, to cowboy poetry and the forming of libraries across the state, this exhibit explores many aspects of literature in our state. Produced by the Kansas State Historical Society.
