Dust Bowl in Kansas
Kansas has suffered through many hot, dry, dusty spells, but the severe
drought of the 1930s was one of the worst. The fine topsoil became powdery
dry, and the vegetation that usually held it in place grew sparsely.
Strong winds raised dust into billowing clouds and dumped it in drifts
across the Plains. These historic photographs illustrate the devastation
of those years known as the "Dust Bowl."

A Farm Farewell: Bittersweet Harvest
This exhibit takes a look at a Kansas farm family experiencing their
final wheat harvest. Written in letter form to her two young sons, Judy
Thomas records her thoughts and feelings as she assists her parents
with the last wheat harvest before they retire. Although Judy's parents
have chosen to retire, the experience is bitterweet for all involved.
It is important to Judy that her sons know the traditions that have
been so much a part of all their lives.
The original story appeared in the Kansas City
Star in July 1999 with photographs by Francine Orr. Produced
by the Kansas Historical Society through a partnership with the Kansas
City Star, Judy Thomas, and Francine Orr.
