Richard Myers graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1960 and from Kansas State University with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1965. He then graduated from Auburn with an MBA in 1977. Myers entered the Air Force in 1965 through the Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He was a pilot and rose steadily through the ranks. He was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest uniformed position in the armed forces, from 2001 to 2005. He was named the Native Sons and Daughters' Distinguished Kansan in 2002.
