The son of Robert and Nancy Brownback, Sam Dale Brownback was born September 12, 1956, in Garnett, Kansas. He earned a bachelor's degree at Kansas State University and a law degree from the University of Kansas in 1982. He married Mary Stauffer in August 1982.
He worked as an attorney in Manhatten before serving as secretary of agriculture for the state of Kansas. He won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 1994. Just two years later, he resigned his position after defeating Jill Docking, a Wichita Democrat, for the unexpired term of Senator Bob Dole. Brownback was reelected in 1998 and again in 2004. In 2010 he was elected 46th governor of Kansas, and reelected in 2014.
