Lewis and Clark Commission

On March 28, 2000, Governor Bill Graves signed Executive Order 00-05, which established the Kansas Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission. On April 27, 2000, Governor Bill Graves appointed members to the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission. The Commission will coordinate Kansas' role in the national effort to recognize the exploration efforts of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

The Kansas Director of Tourism, or a designee, serves as Commission liaison to the governors' office. Agencies asked to serve as resources to the Commission include the Department of Commerce and Housing, Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas Arts Commission, Kansas Humanities Council, Office Native American Affairs of the Department of Human Resources, and the Kansas Historical Society.

The Commission will review the travels of the Lewis and Calrk expedition through Kansas and the role the expedition played in expanding our nation. The Commission will make recommendations to the Governor on ways the state can participate in the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial commemoration.

The Commission will conside a number of roles and activities for the Bicentennial. Kansas projects under consideration include public awareness campaigns, education curricula, cooperation with the national events, and enhancement of the Lewis and Clark trail site in Atchison, Doniphan, Leavenworth and Wyandotte Counties.
