Sundown Film Festival

The fourth annual Sundown Film Festival returns for 2009!

Enjoy free screenings under the stars on four consecutive Friday nights at the Kansas Historical Society in Topeka.

This year's films feature themes related to history, museums, archeology, and fun!

Movies are projected on a wall at the west end of the grassy plaza at the Kansas Historical Society (driving directions) beginning at sundown. Refreshments are sold to help offset the cost of the film series.

Mark these dates on your 2009 calendar:

  • July 17 -- Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
  • Starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. When two teenage boys risk failing an upcoming history report, a special emissary from the future steps in to help. The duo travels through time on a mission to meet characters from history, pass their report, and form their own heavy metal band. Rated PG.

  • July 24 -- The Mummy (1999)
  • Starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. A librarian, her brother, and an archeologist seek the Book of the Living in the ancient city of Hamunaptra. In their quest, they awaken a powerful mummy intent on restoring a tyrannic dictatorship and a curse that can end the world. Rated PG.

  • July 31 -- Bringing Up Baby (1938)
  • Starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. In seeking a brontosaurus bone for an exhibit, a paleontologist encounters an heiress, a big game hunter, a leopard, and a jealous fiancée. Their search for the bone leads to a series of misadventures and mistaken identities. Rated G.

  • August 7-- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
  • Starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen. When a professor of archeology searches for the Ark of the Covenant, his quest takes him on a thrilling adventure to Nepal and Egypt. He battles a rival archeologist and the Nazis in pursuit of this key to human existence. Rated PG-13.

    Tips for enjoying the Sundown Film Festival:

    • Bring your blankets and/or lawn chairs.
    • Come early, because the plaza fills up fast! Set up on the grass, then stroll over to the museum to visit our main gallery for free from 5 to 9 p.m.
    • The movie starts at sundown, usually around 9 p.m.
    • Bug spray is always a good idea on a muggy summer night.
    • The concession stand closes about 30 minutes into the film. Support the festival by buying concessions and/or making donations!
    • In case of rain, the event will be moved inside where the movie will be projected onto a wall in the museum lobby.
