Alfred Fairfax

(1840-circa 1916)

  • Born into slavery in Virginia, escaped and joined the Union army
  • Moved to Chautauqua County in 1880
  • Raised cotton and operated his own cotton gin as Fairfax Ginning Company
  • Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Parsons
  • Elected in 1888 as first African American to serve in the Kansas Legislature
