- Grew up in Kentucky and Missouri
- First husband died of alcoholism
- Worked against the drinking of alcohol through the women's temperance movement
- Moved to Medicine Lodge in 1890
- Led her "Home Defenders" to smash bars and saloons
- Used a hatchet to destroy these businesses, which became her symbol
