Jesse Chisholm


  • Born in Tennessee, of Cherokee descent
  • Before Civil War, operated trading posts in what is now western Oklahoma
  • Called the man with a straight tongue because he could be trusted
  • Indian trader, guide, and interpreter
  • Chisholm Trail named for him, which ran cattle from Texas to the Kansas railheads
