Kansas State Capitol - Online tour - Flags
The flags in the rotunda represent the nations or states that at one time or another have claimed all or portions of what would become the state of Kansas. They include the flags of the United Kingdom (1497-1763), the French Monarchy (1682-1762), the French Republic (1800-1803), Mexico (1821-1836), Spain (1492-1821), and Republic of Texas (1836-1850).
On January 29, 1861, Kansas joined the Union. The 34th star on the United States flag represents Kansas’ entry as the 34th state. Altogether, eight flags have flown over the area now known as the state of Kansas.
