Kansas State Capitol - Online tour - Dome

Capitol domeThe outside of the dome is covered with copper sheeting, which when exposed to weather, oxidizes to the green color seen today. It was the intent of the builders to have a green dome. The glass panels viewed from inside the building make up the inner dome. The outer copper dome extends about 75 feet above this inner dome.

Dome tours were open to the public from 2006 until 2010, when they were discontinued due to the Capitol renovation.

The dome tour began on the fifth floor outside the cage elevator, 296 steps to the top. Now you can take a virtual tour.
