  • Born in Wellsville, attended Kansas State College
  • Enlisted in navy in 1918 and learned to fly seaplanes
  • Worked for Laird Swallow as a mechanic in 1920s
  • Joined Walter Beech and Clyde Cessna to form Travel Air Manufacturing Company in 1925
  • Became president of Lockheed Corporation in 1930s
