Stan Kenton

(1911-1979)

  • Born in Wichita, grew up in Colorado and California
  • Learned piano at an early age and toured with bands as a teenager
  • Formed his first orchestra in 1941
  • Developed a progressive jazz style known as the wall of sound
  • His orchestra was usually 19-piece, he also experimented with a 39-piece group
