William Matthews

- Member of Independent Battery, U.S. Colored Light Artillery
- Recruited members to the First Colored Kansas Volunteer Infantry
- Operated boarding house in Leavenworth that was part of Underground Railroad
- Helped many Missouri slaves escape to Kansas and other free states
