Indian Mission in Fairway is providing an opportunity for you to combine
Kansas standards with a unique educational experience!
Students will rotate through a variety of 25-minute sessions that consist
of historic interpretations, presentations, and hands-on activities.
Concepts covered are: Manifest Destiny: Clash of Cultures; Indian Relocation
and Government Policies; Sectionalism and Secession prior to the Civil
War (e.g., Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska
Act – Popular Sovereignty and Bleeding Kansas. Students will be
working with primary and secondary sources, and will have the opportunity
to experience and learn about Kansas history on the site where events
occurred.
This tour fulfills grade specific standards and provides pre- and post-visit
materials to help teachers address those standards.
Kansas Standards
History
Benchmark 1: The student understands the significance of important
individuals and major developments in history.
- Indicator 4: describes how communication and transportation
systems connect Kansas to other regions, past and present (e.g.,
trails, Pony Express, telegraph, steamboats, railroad lines, highway
systems, air transportation, Internet).
- Indicator 5: (A) compares and contrasts the purposes of the
Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails (e.g., commercial vs. migration).
- Indicator 6: (K) describes life on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California
Trails (e.g., interactions between different cultural groups,
hardships such as lack of water, mountains and rivers to cross,
weather, need for medical care, size of wagon).
Economics
Benchmark 1: The student understands how limited resources require
choices.
Benchmark 5: The student makes effective decisions as a consumer,
producer, saver, investor, and citizen.
Literature
Benchmark 2: The student understands the significance of literature
and its contributions to human understanding and culture.
Writing
Benchmark 1: The student writes narrative text
using the writing process.
Mathematics
Standard 1, Benchmark 4: Computation – The student models, performs, and explains computation with whole numbers, fractions, and money including the use of concrete objects in a variety of situations.
Length of tour: approximately
two hours.
Cost: $2 per participant
Number of students in a group: For
the best experience, we recommend no more than 30 students per
tour.
