Discovery Place

Near the museum lobby lies the hands-on gallery for children. This colorful, inviting room accommodates approximately10 children and is perfect for historic parties or family gatherings. Grandma's attic, dress-up costumes, tipi, switchboard, and a miniature farmstead provide interesting learning activities for all ages.

Open presents and enjoy birthday cake in a private party room. Everyone goes home with a smile and something special from the Kansas History Museum and Library birthday treasure trove. We'll help you make history on your next birthday!

  • A parent will get access to our facility for two hours.
  • The first hour the group will have the inside portion of Discovery Place reserved for a private party. During this time the parents may have access to the classroom to decorate. (Reservation does not include the corral area outside Discovery Place.)
  • The second hour of the party the guests can have cake/food/gifts in one of the Museum classrooms.
  • We will provide a museum party favor for each child.
  • Parents can bring in food and drink, although it must stay in the classroom. Food and drink is not allowed in the Discovery Place. If needed, the parents may also use the kitchenette.
  • All guests at the party can get into our museum for free after the party.
  • Additional Fees and Notes on Birthday Parties:

  • An additional $25 charge is added for set-up/clean-up.
  • An additional $3 per child is added for more than 15 children. (This also applies to extra party favors.) A maximum of 20 children can be accommodated.
  • The regular classroom rental rate applies for parties outside this time period. Discovery Place will be open to the general public, but museum admission is included.

    Tuesday - Saturday (not Sunday or Monday)

    5 - 9 p.m.
    Sunday - Friday (not Saturday)

    (Note: If the party is in the evening, the museum galleries will not be open. The guests of the party cannot get into the museum for free.)
