Popular collections - African American history
African Americans have played a rich and integral role in shaping Kansas history. Even before the territory was created in 1854, blacks were living here. They served in black regiments . . . Following the Civil War there was a distinct migrant movement known as the Exodus and they established communities, businesses, and farms. These early settlers maintained a spirit of community and activism that eventually led to the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.
