Scope and Content

Scope and content: One volume containing summaries of all actions taken in civil and criminal cases appearing before the justice of the peace of Little Caney Township. The records are from the defunct Howard County between 1873-1875, and the current Chautauqua County between 1876-1890. The volume contains and alphabetical index organized by surname of plaintiff with corresponding page numbers. Civil cases are present among the first half while criminal cases comprise the second half of the volumes. The entries provide a record of court appearances showing case number, title and cause, attorneys, dates and nature of pleadings filed and writs issued, sheriff’s return, court orders, record of fees and costs, and summaries of judgment for each case. The civil cases mostly involve indebtedness or destruction of property. The criminal cases document more serious crimes of assault, battery, theft, and disturbing the peace. Provides a good synopsis of each case.
