Scope and Content

Scope and content: Volumes of land patents documenting land grants made to applicants from Marshall County pursuant to the Homestead Act of 1862. Some patent volumes include quitclaim deeds as well, documenting land sales where the grantor relinquishes any interest they may have in a piece of real property and passes that claim to another person. The patents state the name of the applicant, date of application, a description of the land, and a statement awarding the land to the applicant. The patents are awarded by the United States General Land Office and signed by the president, recorder of the General Land Office, and the county register of deeds.
