Harper County, founded on February 26, 1867, was named in memory of Sergeant Marion Harper of Co. E, Second Kansas Cavalry, who died at Waldron, Arkansas, on December 30, 1863 of wounds received the previous day. Harper County is located in south central Kansas along its border with Oklahoma.
In 2006, Harper County had an estimated population of 5,952. Its county seat, and most populous city, is Anthony. County economy is based upon agriculture, livestock, manufacturing, and construction.
