Abstract: Record group contains school records for the Sunnybrook and Stach elementary schools (1908-1964), social welfare vouchers (1970-1973), and a copy of the County's official seal (1983). The bulk of the collection's information is in microfilm format and includes records created by the County Clerk (vital records, 1902-1918), District and Probate Courts (journals and dockets, divorce records, marriage licenses, naturalization records, probate and will documents, 1855-1980), Superintendent of Public Instruction (scholastic census records, 1883-1916), and Register of Deeds (indexes, deeds, mortgages, military discharge records, and land office records, 1855-1955).

Administrative History

Administrative History: Founded on February 11, 1857 as Calhoun County, in honor of John C. Calhoun, of South Carolina, its name was changed in 1859 to Jackson after Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States. Located in northeast Kansas, Jackson County had an estimated population of 13,500 in 2006. Holton is the county seat and its most populous community. The county encompasses the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation. Townships include Banner, Franklin, Adrian, Grant, Cedar, Douglas, Garfield, Jefferson, Liberty, Netawaka, Soldier, Straight Creek, Washington, Whiting, and Lincoln.
