Administrative History

Administrative History: Franklin County was established on August 25, 1855. It was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), the American statesman and inventor. The county is one of the original 33 Kansas Territory counties established by the legislature. The area was included in a treaty ceding land to the Osage Nation in 1808, and ceded back to the federal government in 1825. After 1825 and prior to 1867, treaties with various Indian nations set off parts of what was later to become Franklin County for their use. Ottawa is both the county seat and largest city. Townships include Appanoose, Centropolis, Cutler, Franklin, Greenwood, Harrison, Hayes, Homewood, Lincoln, Ohio, Ottawa, Peoria, Pomona, Pottawatomie, Richmond, and Williamsburg.
