Robert Russell Whittaker

Politician. Republican. Born: September 18, 1939, Eureka, Kansas. Served in U.S. House of Representatives, Fifth District: January 3, 1979, to January 3, 1991.

Born in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas, on September 18, 1939, Bob Whittaker attended the University of Kansas and Emporia State College after receiving his local public school education. In 1962 he earned a degree at Illinois College of Optometry. He became involved in local politics and was elected to the Kansas state house of representatives in1974 (1975-1977) before being elected to the 96th Congress in 1978 (served, January 3, 1979 to January 3, 1991). He chose not to seek his party's nomination for a seventh term in 1990, instead returning to live and work in Augusta.
