Wealthy Hotchkiss Brown

Born: 1829, Ohio. Died: 1911, Ohio.

Wealthy Hotchkiss was born in Ohio in 1829 to Stephen and Hannah (Brown) Hotchkiss. She married John Brown, Jr., the eldest son of the famous John Brown, in the summer of 1847.

In 1855 she moved with her husband to Franklin County. Other members of the Brown family moved to the area later that year. During her time in Kansas, her father-in-law and brothers-in-law became involved in with the Bleeding Kansas fights in Lawrence, Black Jack, Osawatomie, and the Pottawatomie Massacre.  Despite her husband having no part in the Pottawatomie Massacre, he was imprisoned on charges of treason for much of 1856.

After the years of violence so synonymous with the Brown family, Brown and her husband eventually settled in Put-in-Bay, Ohio. She lived there the remainder of her days until she died in 1911.
