- Born a slave and escaped to freedom after 37 years
- Operated secret boardinghouse for escaped slaves
- Organized nearly 300 African Americans to follow him to Kansas in 1873
- Called “Father of the Exodus” for helping thousands of former slaves relocate to Kansas
