(1809 - 1900)

  • Born a slave and escaped to freedom after 37 years
  • Operated secret boardinghouse for escaped slaves
  • Organized nearly 300 African Americans to follow him to Kansas in 1873
  • Called “Father of the Exodus” for helping thousands of former slaves relocate to Kansas
