Born in Lawrence, followed father’s career in paleontology
Began directing fossil expeditions in early 1900s
Internationally recognized paleontologist, curator of the museum at Fort Hays State University
Discovered “fish-within-a-fish” fossil in Gove County in 1952 (Xiphactinus audax)
Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays named for him
